Richard Fields, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Coastal Development, LLC, has utilized his abilities as a business leader to develop a host of successful projects in the country. At present, Coastal Development, LLC, is at work on a revitalization of Suffolk Downs, the only racetrack in Massachusetts dedicated to Thoroughbreds. Since acquiring a majority share in the facility in 2007, Richard Fields and Coastal Development, LLC, have displayed their commitment to the project in several ways.
Notably, Coastal Development, LLC, and the other stakeholders have committed millions of dollars to rebuilding the barns, and they significantly increased the advertising budget, as well. In 2008, they dedicated $1.6 million to marketing efforts. Richard Fields also understands the importance of attracting faster horses and skilled jockeys to the track, so from 2007 to 2009, Suffolk Downs paid out an additional $2.2 million in purse money over what is mandated by legislation in Massachusetts.
Moreover, Coastal Development, LLC, and Richard Fields benefit the community in Massachusetts through their work with Suffolk Downs. The racetrack employs nearly 1,800 people, and the work of an additional 500 individuals, including veterinarians, breeders, and boarders, is directly impacted by operations at the facility.
Beyond his obligations at Coastal Development, LLC, Richard Fields oversees operations at Jackson Land and Cattle, in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Situated on 1,750 acres, Jackson Land and Cattle remains a working ranch, and it recently acquired Peptoboonsmal, a legacy sire. Passionate about ranching, Richard Fields also holds a seat on the board of directors of Farm Aid and contributes financial support to American Quarter Horse Youth Assistance Program. His not-for-profit organization also partnered with Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation to launch a care facility for retired racehorses.
